Playing the auction house

I’ve been spending way too much gold since WotLK, many gear upgrades, a couple of new daggers, frost resist gear and everything gemmed and enchanted. I had about 15000 gold when WotLK came out, now i have 9500 gold. It’s still decent, but one day, i would like to get myself a chopper and a mammoth!

I’m not a farmer, i don’t like to grind for hours and hours. But i do like to find ways to generate a little gold, go at it from different angles. A while back i started a alt, gave it 100 gold and just bought and sold on the auction house. After a few months i had 3000 gold on that character.

So a few weeks back i started a new character, send her 500 gold and walked her to Stormwind City to start dealing.

Initially i focused on mats for tbc-enchants, like Mongoose. The thought behind that was that there wasn’t a good replacement enchants yet, and people were replacing their gear so fast they would need enchants a lot. I’ve been following the ah prices in an online spreadsheet. After a couple of weeks i decided this wasn’t really a good plan, it turned out there were enough mats around for, probably from the many deathknights leveling through the Burning Crusade areas. I didn’t loose any money, but no real profit either.

I do read threads like the icy art of making gold and other tips i come across, like this post on the tardfactor on how to make money from patch 3.0.8. Especially the new possibility to exchange Ink of the Sea for other inks are interesting. Early january there was loads of cheap ink of the sea on the auction house, 9 gold for 20. I bought the whole lot, waiting now for the patch to come out.

I’m not sure yet what exatly i’m gonna do with it, i could exchange it for Snowfall Ink (which goes for 70-100 gold now) or simple resell the ink of the sea. I could resell now actually, because i haven’t seen any of the low prices yet for which i bought the ink.

Another tip is the changing of mats for new enchants. Dream Shard will be more in demand, so now is a good time to buy. Whenever it was below 10 gold i bought them for my main character, so i have a cheap stack for when i have upgrades!
